Recent Creations, Again

Wow, it’s been a while! I kind of let this blog slip my mind. Whoops! Well, at least I’m back now. Don’t mind the gap!

Though it’s been a while since I’ve written much (besides private journals), I have still been drawing and painting, mostly on my iPad. I haven’t done much in the way of crocheting, but at least I’ve been creating something. Below is the collection of my creations from the last couple of months.

The last time I shared my creations, I had the context of having just finished Inktober to anchor myself and give a point of reference. Now, I have no real structure. I just do art when I feel like it, and don’t often create finished pieces. That’s why there are so few creations considering how long it’s been. But there are still some, so let’s get into the specific comments about each piece.

First, there’s a collection of Little Guys doodled in bold black on white. This one was inspired by an episode of my favourite YouTube channel, Drawfee, in which the four artists drew a bunch of “little guys”, which means something different to each artist. It’s a really fun channel! Here’s a link to that video.

The waterfall, skulls, and frogs were drawn as transparent illustrations so I could upload them as designs on RedBubble (check out my shop here!) The transparency helps make them work on the products better. As to why they’re a floating waterfall, a field of frogs, and a collection of skulls, that’s just because I thought they were cool concepts and I wanted them to be on clothes and notebooks and things.

Next, you might recognize this as the iconic duo Westley and Buttercup, from one of my all-time favourite films, The Princess Bride. I rewatched it recently, and realized that I had never actually drawn much fanart of it. I don’t think I’ve done much fanart in general, really. It’s never my first thought when I sit down to draw, for some reason. But I did a sketch, and painted it, and this is the result! It’s not a perfect likeness, but I’m pretty happy with it. I did do one drawing of this movie once before, of one of the most memed scenes in the movie.

After that there’s a girl in blue and orange, which doesn’t really have a story to it. I just started painting using those colours, and this is the image I ended up creating.

Then there are two images, both featuring the same tabaxi with a fancy pendant. Her name is Nix (short for Soaring Phoenix of Burning Sands) and she’s a character I made for a D&D game I’m hoping to play in soon, and she’s a grave domain cleric. All this will sound like nerdy jibberish to some people, but to others it will be of significance. And I’m excited about the character I created, so I’m going to share more! She grew up as a street urchin without knowing her parents or why they abandoned her, until one day a necromancer stabbed her in the heart to offer her as a sacrifice to his patron. In her dying moments, Nix was visited by the tabaxi goddess Natarat, who offered her another chance at life and holy powers in exchange for devoting herself to spread the will of Natarat and rid the mortal world of the plague of the undead. Nix agreed to the offer, and was reborn as a cleric. She dedicated the next few years to fulfilling her promise to fight undeath and help defend the living. She could feel something pulling her to keep moving, looking for… something. That’s where the story hook will come in, once the campaign starts. But that’s the backstory I’ve come up with!

I did a self portrait for the first time in a while, to see how I saw myself changed. I think this is a pretty accurate portrait, and it’s cool to compare to old self portraits I’ve done through the years.

Then we have a cheerful Pokemon trainer surrounded by some sketched images of Pokemon. This is a picture representing the beginning team I have so far in my Pokemon SoulSilver nuzzlocke game that I started playing. These are the Pokemon on my team so far: my starter Totodile, Nibbles; the first catch, a Hoothoot named Specs; the Rattata, Scraps; and my newest addition, Belladonna the Bellsprout. It’s a humble team, but I haven’t played very much of the game yet. I just wanted to periodically do artwork representing the whole team, so it felt more like a real connection. It’s going to suck if any of them faint! (In a nuzzlocke game, any faint counts as a permanent death.)

The next piece of the slouching guy smoking a cigarette was one attempt at creating characters for each of my Battletech mechs, which are miniatures with their own tabletop battle game. This character would be the pilot of the Fire Moth, the smallest of my mechs. It’s very fast, has very powerful guns, and has next to no armour at all, so one rogue shot will take it out. I didn’t come up with a name or anything about this person, and I’m probably going to do a different drawing of him, but this is the first version.

Second to last, there’s a detailed painting of an imaginary planet with its sun in the background, against the nebula-filled space. This is the planet of my world I’m working on designing, but also I just wanted to try and paint the most realistic looking planet from space I could. I looked up references and did my best to make it look like it could exist. The planet is mostly one big ocean, with an island continent on one side. The other side is actually unknown if it’s land or water, at least from this painting. I’ll have to paint what the other side looks like another time.

Finally, there’s my most recent painting. I don’t know who this character is, but I really like how this painting turned out. If you hide the layers of the character and the trees, you can actually see the whole storefront, and it says “West Variety”. I thought it would be kind of fun to have unnecessary details hidden in there, that you only can make out if you know ahead of time. For this picture, I did actually copy a couple of pictures from the internet, because I didn’t feel like it was necessary to detail her tattoo or the chainlink fence. So those are both not original designs by me. Also, I used a stamp brush for the butterflies pattern on her top. But that’s all normal digital art stuff. I just felt like listing all of it, in case you wanted to know.

So, that’s the end! I hope to have more stuff to share again sooner than two months next time, but until then, have a lovely day!
