One of my favourite songs from my childhood is called The Garden Song, specifically the version sung by Canadian children’s singer Charlotte Diamond. She gave the lyrics a bit of a twist, but I have been entirely unable to find her version of the lyrics online. Even the ones labeled as by her have the original lyrics, which aren’t accurate. So, I’m going to write them out myself.
The Garden Song
By Charlotte Diamond
Inch by inch, row by row,
Gonna make this garden grow
Gonna mulch it deep and low
Gonna make it fertile groundInch by inch, row by row,
Please bless these seeds I sow
Please keep them safe below
Til the rains come tumblin’ downPulling weeds and picking stones,
We are made of dreams and bones.
I need a spot to call my own,
For the time is close at handGrain for grain, sun and rain
Find my way in natuire’s chain
Tune my body and my brain
To the music of the landInch by inch, row by row
Gonna make this garden grow
Gonna mulch it deep and low
Gonna make it fertile groundInch by inch, row by row
Please bless these seeds I sow
Please keep them safe below
Til the rains come tumblin’ downPlant your rows, short or long,
Season with a cheerful song
Mother earth will make you strong
If you give her loving careAn old crow watchin’ from a tree
Got his hungry eye on me
In my garden, I’m as free
As that feathered thief up thereInch by inch, row by row,
Gonna make this garden grow
Gonna mulch it deep and low
Gonna make it fertile groundInch by inch, row by row
Please bless these seeds I sow
Please keep them safe below
Til the rains come tumblin’ downTil the rains come tumblin’ down
